Connecting in Community Step 10: CELEBRATION SUSTAINS US

For the end of the year we’ve been going through 10 small, easy things you can do to start connecting in your community by understanding yourself, your context, the people in your community, and the conflicts in your setting. Check out Step 1 , Step 2, Step 3, Step 4 , Step 5, Step 6, Step 7, Step 8, and Step 9.

Step 10 (our last one) is CELEBRATION.

Sometimes, peacebuilding can be hard, and there’s so much conflict and division in our world that we can easily get stuck in the hurt, so making space to celebrate what’s good and beautiful helps us to slow down, care for ourselves, and remind ourselves of the future we’re working toward.

Here are some suggestions for practicing this:

  • Practice gratitude. Whether throughout your day, or at the end of the day, make space to appreciate and celebrate the moments and relationships that give you life.

  • There are beautiful and powerful stories to celebrate all around us if we’re paying attention. So be on the lookout for encouraging and uplifting stories—even better if they occur in your community—and then share them with others so the joy can spread.

  • Celebrate with someone you trust. Tell them about something new you learned, a decision you’re proud of, or a bit about how you’ve been changing.  Be excited, and invite them to be excited with you. Then, find a way to celebrate them!
