Reclaiming Identity As Part of Peacebuilding Work

This call is hosted by the Christian Peacebuilding Network (CPN), a multi-org group we helped found, and is part of a series of monthly conversations to help connect Christian peacebuilders and discuss themes related to peacebuilding and the Christian faith.

Ron Kraybill’s “Cycle of Reconciliation” suggests that reconciliation, rather than erasing the past, is a long-lasting process that goes through several stages. One of the steps in this cycle is “reclaiming identity,” a deeply significant step in moving people past the addiction to or mimesis of violence and retaliation. But as people who work at the intersection of conflict and difference, we ourselves can at times get caught up in crossfire. Often this takes the form of criticism for being “with them,” because our own group thinks that loving the enemy means we become the enemy. Or, may simply feel isolated from our community at times as we walk a path that can be lonely. In these spaces it is very important that we reconnect to who we really are. How do we “reclaim our identity”?

At our upcoming CPN meeting, Jonny Clark, Corrymeela’s Public Theology Programme Manager, will lead us through some self reflection. As peacebuilders we have a wonderful but at times challenging vocation. It’s important to look after ourselves.

If you’re a Christian peacebuilder, join us for this online discussion to talk and process together about the following questions.

Discussion questions:

  • What does "reclaiming identity" mean to you in the context of your work in peacebuilding? Who or what has helped you reconnect with your identity during challenging times? How can we support each other in this process?

  • In moments of isolation, what strategies have you used to stay grounded and connected to your purpose? When you have felt caught in the crossfire of conflict, how did that affect your sense of belong and identity?

  • What self-care practices do you find helpful in maintaining your well-being and resilience in this work?

Time:

3:00pm Central Europe / Central Africa (4:00pm East Africa Time / Jerusalem, 2:00pm UK, 9:00am USA Eastern, 6:30pm India Time)
